Abstract
A dispersion of a particulate solid material of greater than colloidal size in a liquid medium which contains within it a flocculent material in quantity sufficient to constitute a loose network of flocks within the medium. The inclusion of the flocculent material does not increase the viscosity of the medium, that the network of flocks tend to retard the settling of the solid particulate material and that when, in due course, such settling may occur, redispersion of the sediment is very readily effected since the flocks prevent close packing of the solid material and the medium is of a low viscosity. The flocks produced should have an almost negligible apparent density, i.e. a small weight of the material occupying a very large volume in the liquid carrier. Flocculants specified are silica montmorillonite or wax. Silica for moulds and aluminium flakes may be dispersed.ALSO:An alkyl ammonium montmorillonite gel is dispersed in toluene and flocculated with white spirit containing a polyphenyl resin binder by mixing. Aluminium flake is added and forms a stable suspension.
