Abstract
Improved procedure for the clarification of raw water containing suspended solids in it, a portion of the suspended solids is made up of colloidal particles with a diameter within the scale of approximately 0.09 to 15 millimicrons and provide at least 0.5 Jackson Turbidity Units at total turbidity of raw water within the scale of 4 to 250 Jackson Turbidity Units; characterized in that it comprises mixing the raw water with an effective amount of a polyquaternary flocculant which is a 37 weight percent aqueous solution based on the cationic portion of the polyquaternary flocculant having a solution viscosity at a temperature of 25ºC. from about 40 to 150 centistokes in order to form initial flocs that remain suspended in the water; allowing the initial flocs to remain suspended in the water until an effective amount of the colloidal particles are absorbed into them to form settleable flocs; and then sediment the settable flocs with their absorbed content of colloidal particles.
