In an apparatus for measuring and locating variations in a length of material during processing or handling means for marking the material into determinable increments prior to said processing or handling, means for measuring the marked increments of material after processing or handling and the length of the corresponding marked increment prior to processing or handling being proportional to changes in length as a result of the processing or handling. Material or roving 14 is drawn through rollers 12 past marking means 30 to a flyer mechanism 16 and wound on to a bobbin 18. During rotation of the flyer 16 the roving 14 is twisted causing a contraction in its length, the difference in rotational speeds of the rollers 12 and the bobbin 18 producing relative stretching of the roving. The roving 14 is marked at required incremental distances by marker means 30, comprising a fixed roller loaded with ink and a movable roller between which the roving is drawn, the movable roller being moved to the operable position through solenoid means energized automatically when rollers 12 have moved through a predetermined number of revolutions. After stretching, the roving 14 is unwound from the bobbin 18 on to counting means 34 comprising a hand-driven drum 98 whose shaft 100 is connected to a mechanical counter 104, so that the distance between the marks on the roving after processing for handling may be determined. In a modification apparatus is described for marking increments in relation to layers on a package.
