Abstract

997,390. Knitting-machines. N. CORAH (ST. MARGARET) Ltd. April 19, 1962 [April 21, 1961], No. 14430/61. Heading D1C. In a superposed cylinder circular knitting machine having a yarn take-up wire associated with a trapper actuated thereby mechanical means are provided which are operable when knitting a heel or toe pouch, in timed relationship with the reciprocatory movements of the needle cylinders to act on the wire to open the trapper and release the yarn before the first knitting needle in the heel or toe group draws on the yarn. An individual take-up wire 16 is provided for each backing yarn and plating yarn. Each wire is pivoted at 17 and is biased rearwardly by a spring 18 to swing backwards momentarily and allow the trapper 21, 22 to close at each reversal of the needle cylinders. Fingers 23, one for each wire, pivoted at 24 have tails 23a which may be depressed by a slide 26 operated by a cam on the upper needle cylinder 2 to move their operative ends 23a away from pins 29 mounted on the pivot blocks 19 of the wires 16. At the end of the forward swing of each wire 16 the slide 26 rises to allow the finger ends 23a to descend into abutment with each pin 29 to positively push the latter back and move the wire forward to separate the trapper elements 21, 22 and release the clamping action on the yarn passing through the eye of the wire 16. The slide 26 then moves downwards to lift the ends 23a of the fingers clear of the pins 19 before the wires 16 swing back. A cam 33 on the main control drum 5 actuates mechanism 30, 31, 32 to depress the slide 26 and render the fingers 23 inoperative when a heel or toe pouch is not being knitted. The feeder 9, which has a hole 10 (see Fig. 3) receiving a face yarn Y<SP>1</SP> and a loop 11 for receiving a backing yarn Y<SP>2</SP>, feeds the yarns during the reciprocatory knitting of a heel or toe pouch and during the rotary knitting of the leg, instep and foot bottom of a footwear article. A second yarn feeder 12 is provided to feed a third yarn Y<SP>3</SP> during the knitting of the pouches. The yarn Y<SP>2</SP> may be a nylon backing yarn, while plating yarns Y<SP>1</SP> and Y<SP>3</SP> may be of "Orlon" (Registered Trade Mark). It is stated that the edges of the forward and reverse stitch cams may be recessed (Fig. 4, not shown), to relieve the yarns of unnecessary tension during knitting.
