997,136. Valves. ROSS OPERATING VALVE CO. Oct. 29, 1963 [Oct. 31, 1962; Sept. 12, 1963], No. 42690/63. Heading F2V. The position of a piston 39 connected e.g. to a three-way valve, is controlled by a solenoidactuated three-way pilot-valve 48 and a lock valve 15. With the latter in its right-hand position and the solenoid 51 energized fluid passes from an inlet 43 to a piston port 35 via lock valve ports 16, 21, pilot valve inlet and outlet 45, 46, lock-valve port 34 and lock-valve chamber 33 so holding the valve 15 in the position shown. If the solenoid 51 is deenergized, e.g. due to a circuit failure, the pilot valve 48 connects the chamber 33 and piston port 35 to an exhaust port 49 so that the piston 39 is spring-returned and the lock-valve 15 is urged by inlet pressure and a spring to the position shown. Upon repair of the circuit failure, the lock-valve 15 must be moved manually to the right before fluid pressure is again available at motor port 35. Similar conditions will apply as the result of reduction or disruption of the fluid-pressure supply and its subsequent restoration. In a modification, the lock-valve comprises two abutting parts, one part controlling the fluid flow to and from the valve actuating piston, and the other part being a manually-operable piston defining the movable portion of the lockvalve chamber. The fluid supply to the valve actuating piston does not pass through the pilot valve.
