Abstract

996,849. Wrapping-machines. SIGNET PACKAGING ENTERPRISES Ltd. Oct. 9, 1963 [Oct. 23, 1962], No. 40167/62. Heading B8C. A method of wrapping stacks of cuboid articles such as liquid-filled cartons comprises applying pressure on all sides of the stack and securing the wrapper about the stack while the latter is compressed. The wrapper may be of single faced corrugated cardboard with panels corresponding to the six sides of the stack and may be in the form of two, three panel sections or an integral T-shaped blank. Apparatus for producing the package from a two section 48a, 48b wrapper, Fig. 2, with pressure-sensitive glue laps 48e, 48f, comprises a pair of cradles 50, 51 pivoting about a common axis from the chain-dotted to full line positions shown in Fig. 13. Each cradle comprises package support plates, those 50a, 50b of the cradle 50 both being movable relative to it, while of the plates 51a, 51b of the cradle 51, only 51b is relatively movable. The wrapper sections are positioned on the cradle 51 in its lowered position, the upper of them being supported by fixed elements 96, Fig. 2, and the plate 50b, which is fully advanced, and the stack is placed to rest on the plates 51a, 51b. Both cradles then rise to bring the plates 50a, 51a into horizontal alignment, Fig. 13, and trap the stack and wrapper between the plates 50b, 51b. A plate 57 then advances to compress the stack against a fixed plate 60, Fig. 8. The glue lap 48c is secured by the plate 50b pressing it against wrapper section 48a. Above the cradles is a horizontally reciprocable carriage comprising two relatively movable parts 42, 43 and the latter including a plate 61 which is pressed down on the stack when the cradles have risen, by lowering of the frame on which the carriage is mounted. It also carries a plate 62 and as the part 43 is moved to the left, Fig. 13, this folds down the upstanding wrapper panel of the Section 48b while maintaining the pressure. A roller 65 on the part 43 then descends to wipe the glue lap 48d on to the lefthand panel, Fig. 11. Plate 51b now pushes the package between fixed plates 72, 73, Fig. 8, and on to plate 50a, the plate 50b receding while still exerting pressure. Wrapper panels are then folded on to the sides of the stack. During this movement, guides 87, 88 on the plates 72, 73 wipe adhesive tape from rolls 91 along the adjacent package corners, Fig. 6B. Known moistening and cutting means may be present (not shown). Finally rollers 80, 81 swing inwards to wipe the glue laps 48e, 48f on to the right-hand panel, also Fig. 6B. The carriage part 43 moves with the package to maintain vertical pressure, the friction between the pack. age and plate 62 causing the whole carriage to move to the left, Fig. 13. The package is discharged by lowering the cradle 50, the plate 50a then rising to the chain dotted position of Fig. 13 to tilt it, in the form shown in Fig. 9, on to a conveyer 103. In other methods of applying the wrapper (not detailed) pressure may be released temporarily from a side of the stack to enable a panel to be folded on to it.
