996,605. Transformer tap changers. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. Oct. 27, 1961 [Oct. 28, 1960], No. 38549/61. Heading H2B. An on load tap changing switch comprises a single rectilinearly moving contact carrier 12 carrying spring-loaded butt contacts 19, 23 having differing stroke lengths to determine a sequence of tap changing operations through a plurality of resistances. The switch is operated by a crank 8 and connecting rod 7 coupled by a spring straining quick action device 4, 11, 14, 15 to the carrier 12. Motion of the carrier is damped to stop contact bounce by means of plates 26, 27 (Fig. 2, not shown) which have variable sized apertures to reduce air displacement. The contacts 19, 23 are mounted on hollow pistons 20 telescopically displaceable against helical springs 21 in guide cylinders 22 attached to the carrier. The stroke length of the pistons 20 in cylinders 22 determines the displacement of the carrier required to make or break the contacts and by arranging for different stroke lengths in the two halves of the switch a sequence of switching operations is obtained (Fig. 3, not shown).
