Abstract
996,562. Abduction splints. S. H. CAMP & CO. July 29, 1963 [Oct. 8, 1962], No. 29977/63. Heading A5R. A hip abduction splint comprises thighreceiving cuffs 10, 12 interconnected by anterior and posterior cross-pieces 30, a back piece 46 on the posterior cross-piece and a chest strap 56, 58 attached to the back piece. Each crosspiece comprises two overlapping metal straps 34, 36, each strap being screwed at one end to a cuff and having a series of holes 42 at the other end. The overlap of the straps is adjustable to vary the length of the cross-piece, holes in one strap being aligned with holes in the other strap and the straps being secured together by screws 44 in pairs of aligned holes. The back piece is made of superimposed transparent polyethylene sheets which are stitched together and enclose a stay 50. The cuffs are made of polyethylene, their edges being padded with foam material covered with synthetic leather. One end of each cuff has an inside flap 20, which in use bridges the ends of the cuff, and an outside flap 22 having loosely woven fibres which engage rigid looped members of a strip 28 on the other end of the cuff to secure the cuff around a thigh. The cross-pieces are made of material which may be bent manually to fit the infant but which is sufficiently rigid to resist bending by the infant.
