Abstract

1414138 Splint carrying cases; splints J DREW 12 Dec 1972 [25 Jan 1972] 3503/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division A4] A carrying case for a dismantleable splint frame having elongate side members 1, 2 which extend from a limb-engaging member 3 to a bridging piece 4, comprises a sheet 51 having side flaps 52, 53 and end flaps 54, (55), Fig. 3 (not shown), which are foldable to form a closed case for containing the dismantled parts of the splint frame, fasteners on the sheet 51 for retaining the flaps in the folded position and sleeves 75, 76 provided on the sheet 51; in use of the splint frame the side members 1, 2 are received in the sleeves 75, 76 so that the sheet 51 serves as a sling with the side flaps 52, 53. being wrapped over the limb. The embodiment shown is for use on the leg of a patient and comprises a thigh-engaging member 3 which has a U-shaped metal skeleton covered by a padded sheath (5), Fig. 1 (not shown). The member 3 may be varied in size by bending the metal skeleton. The sheath (5) forms two straps 6, 7; the strap 7, and a strip 8 attached to the strap 6 carry cooperating "touch and close" tapes (11) and (9). The side members are made up to the required lengths from rods, and arms 14, 15 of a generally U-shaped bridging piece 4. Thus, for example, the side member 1 consists of the arm 14 which is telescopically received in the hollow end of a rod (16) having an extension pin (21) received by the hollow end of a rod 18; the extension pin (23) of the rod 18 is received by a stub 12 swivellably mounted on the member 3. Screws are provided for holding the extension pins within the respective hollow ends of the rods. Holes, e.g. the hole 27, are provided in the splint frame to receive suspension hooks for supporting the splint. The carrying case shown has a sheet 51 of plastics or woven fabric. Pieces 58, 67 of material sewn onto the side flaps 52, 53 define elongate pockets 61, 62 and 69, 71 for receiving frame rods. The pockets are closed by flaps 64, 72 having "touch and close " tapes. The dismantled thigh-engaging member 3 and bridging piece 4 are placed on a central portion 56 of the sheet 51 and are covered by folding over the end flaps 54, (55) and connecting "touch and close" tapes 82, (83), Fig. 3 (not shown). The leg of a patient is strapped in the splint by straps 84, 85 which are threaded through rings (91, 92), Fig. 2 (not shown), and fastened by "touch and close" tapes 88, 89. In a modified form the sleeves 75, 76 may be replaced by a single wide sleeve. Other forms of fastener, such as press fasteners, buttons, or buckles, may replace the fasteners shown. Two or three pairs of sleeves may be provided to accommodate differing limb sizes. In an alternative form for use on the arm of a patient, the side members are provided with hinges.
