Abstract

1,162,057. Back supports. J. D. CHARTERS. 19 Oct., 1967, No. 47650/67. Heading A5R. A back support comprises pair of resilient member swhich extend, when in use, one down each side of .the body of the wearer from the armpit to the region of the hip joint, the resilient members (which each may comprise separate spaced parts 11, 12) being connected by a band stretching across the back of the wearer in the region of the lumbar spine and by a member passing across the chest of the wearer. As shown, the resilient members of the support are each in: two parts, the upper parts 11 being joined by a flexible chest harness 16, 18 and the lower parts 12 being joined across the back of the wearer by a member 15. which includes a flexible rubber or plastics plate (14) pivotally connected to the member 15 (Figure 2, not shown). The support also includes a band of elastic material (secured for example, as in Figures 14, 15, not shown) and rigid brace members 17 which support the parts 11 and also extend (Figure 2, not shown) behind the shoulders of the wearer where they are connected to the harness straps 16. Alternative harness arrangements including straps (23, 24) and rigid members (20) are illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 (not shown) and, as illustrated in Figure 6 (not shown), the support may include a rigid chest plate (32). The support may include an arrangement of straps (44, 45) fitted around the hips and curved plates (42) held against the inside of the thighs (Figure 7, not shown), the strap and plate arrangement optionally being pivotally attached (Figure 12, not shown) to the resilient side members. The support may include (Figures 10, 16, not shown) a partially or wholly rigid part (46, 50) joining the lower ends of the resilient side members across the front of the wearer and acting as a hernia truss or as an abdomen support during pregnancy. A back support (Figures 8, 9, not shown) may also include elastic members 40 extending from the upper part of the support, across the wearer's back and between the legs to the front of the lower part of the support. The support 'may also include U-shaped membens (Figure 13, not shown) joined together by one or more springs (50).
