Abstract

A water-soluble hydrated crystalline product in the form of crystals of a hydrated trisodium phosphate containing a higher alkyl sulphuric acid ester or a salt thereof present within the crystalline structure of said crystals. The salt is preferably sodium lauryl sulphate and the hydrated trisodium phosphate may be chlorinated. The crystalline product is produced by crystallization from a hot solution containing hydrated trisodium phosphate and sodium lauryl sulphate or disodium phosphate, sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite and sodium lauryl sulphate, depending on the product required. The shape of the crystal thus formed depends on the proportion of sodium lauryl sulphate and the mode of crystallization. Rod-shaped crystals having a hexagonal cross-section and a longitudinally extending tubular passageway therein are produced when 0.001-0.10% by weight of sodium lauryl sulphate is added to the hot solution which is subsequently allowed to cool undisturbed. Needle-shaped crystals having a hexagonal cross-section are produced when 0.001-0.3% by weight of sodium lauryl sulphate is added to the hot solution which is then agitated during cooling. Needle-shaped hydrated crystals containing a large proportion of sodium lauryl sulphate can be produced by crystallizing trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate and sodium lauryl sulphate in the presence of no more moisture than is required to produce the water of crystallization. Potassium permanganate may be incorporated in any of the above crystals as colouring matter.ALSO:A water-soluble hydrated crystalline product for use in detergent compositions comprises crystals of a hydrated trisodium phosphate containing a higher alkyl sulphuric acid ester or a salt thereof present within the crystalline structure of said crystals. The salt is preferably sodium lauryl sulphate and the hydrated trisodium phosphate may be chlorinated. The shape of the crystals depends on the proportion of sodium lauryl sulphate included and the mode of crystallization. Rod-shaped crystals having a hexagonal cross-section and a longitudinally extending tubular passageway therein are produced when 0.001-0.10% by weight of sodium lauryl sulphate is added to the hot solution of phosphate which is subsequently allowed to cool undisturbed. Needle-shaped crystals having a hexagonal cross-section are produced when 0.001-0.3% by weight of sodium lauryl sulphate is added to the hot solution which is then agitated during cooling. Needle-shaped crystals containing a larger proportion of sodium lauryl sulphate can be produced by crystallizing trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate and sodium lauryl sulphate in the presence of no more moisture than is required to produce the water of crystallization. Potassium permanganate may be incorporated in any of the above crystals as colouring matter.
