Abstract

A toothpaste composition has a pH of 4,0 to 5,5 and contains sufficient material capable, when in association with water, of supplying at least 25 parts of fluoride ions and at least 10 parts of stannous ions per million parts of toothpaste and also contains at least 20% by weight of toothpaste of a compatible abrasive, at least 10% by weight of the abrasive being insoluble sodium metaphosphate and contains a compound capable of dissociating in water to supply 10 to 1000 parts of stannous ions per million parts of water and which is present in amount to provide a reservoir of undissociated stannous tin sufficient to maintain 10 parts of stannous ions per million of toothpaste. Suitable fluorine containing compounds are stannous fluoride (preferred) sodium fluoride, ammonium fluoride, potassium fluoride, zinc fluoride, cupric fluoride, lithium fluoride. InF3 PdF2 Na2SiF6 CaZrF6 NaBF4 fluotitanates, SnCLF, Sn2CPF3, KSnF3, and NaSnF3. Suitable stannous ion containing compounds apart from those already mentioned are stannous sulphate, chloride, or gluconate. The "stannous ion reservoir" may be stannous citrate, stannous lactate, stannous tartrate and preferably stannous metaphosphate and pyrophosphate in order that the desired concentration of free stannous ions may be maintained if the stannous ions present are rendered unavailable by reaction with other components of the dentifrice. The compatible abrasive present comprises insoluble sodium metaphosphate and between 10 and 90% of another abrasive compatible with the other components of the dentifrice e.g. those calcium phosphates disclosed in Specification 746,550 e.g. calcium pyrophosphates, calcium polyphosphates, calcium metaphosphates, calcium oxyapatite, and a - and b -tricalcium orthophosphates. An addition, and as substances which also prohibit the decalcification of the teeth by sodium metaphosphate, magnesium pyrophosphate and magnesium metaphosphate may be used as the abrasive. Sudsing agents may also be present in the compositions in a proportion up to 5% by weight; among them being water soluble alkyl and alkyl ether sulphates and sulphonates having alkyl groups of from 8 to 18 carbon atoms; water soluble salts of sulphonated monoglycerides of fatty acids having 10 to 18 carbon atoms; water soluble salts of sulphated fatty alcohols having 10 to 18 carbon atoms; salts of fatty acid amides of taurines; salts of fatty acids esters of isothionic acid; substantially saturated aliphatic acyl amides of saturated aliphatic monoaminocarboxylic acids. Thickeners may be added e.g. sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylhydroxyethylcellulose, natural gums silica or magnesium aluminium silicate. Humectants, flavours and sweetening agents may also be added to the compositions. A method of determining "enamel solubility reduction" is disclosed in the specification. Specifications 804,486, 809,513 and 821,925 also are referred to.
