Abstract

In a cyclic absorption-purge-desorption process for separating straight-chain hydrocarbon from their mixtures with branched chain and/or cyclic hydrocarbons employing a plurality of fixed beds of 5<\>rA molecular sieve, the ratio of the duration of the absorption, purge and desorption periods is 1: 1: n, where n is an integer of at least 3, and preferably not more than 6. The mixture may be a petroleum fraction boiling in the range C4-350 DEG C. The process is preferably operated isothermally, isobarically, and preferably also wholly in the vapour phase. Purge may be effected by nitrogen or a C1-C5 straight-chain hydrocarbon. Desorption may be effected by n-butane or n-pentane. Preferred conditions are 300-450 DEG C. and 50-2000 p.s.i.g.
