Abstract

Polyoxymethylene is stabilized by adding thereto a hydantoin of formula <FORM:0996252/C3/1> where R1 and R2 each represent hydrogen or a hydrocarbon or acyl group and R3 and R4 each represent hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group and R3 and R4 may form a ring mutually, the hydantoin being present in an amount from 0.01 to 50%. Specified hydantoins are hydantoin and the methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, ter-butyl, pentyl, hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl, octyl, cyclohexyl, methylcyclohexyl, 5-5-tetramethylene, 5-5-pentamethylenespiro, 5-5-hexamethylenespiro, 5 - 5 - heptamethylenespiro, phenyl, tolyl, hydroxyphenyl and dihydroxy phenyl hydantoins. Known stabilizers, e.g. phenol, aromatic amines, urea derivatives, hydrazine derivatives and solvents, e.g. carbon tetrachloride methylene chloride, pentane, heptane, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, diethyl ether methyl ethyl ketone, methanol, ethanol, toluene and benzene may be present and may contain water. The polymer may be acetylated. Specifications 860,410 and 914,708 are referred to.
