Abstract
Fibres and films are formed by melt extrusion from isotactic polypropylene containing up to 25% of atactic polypropylene and one or more substances stable at temperatures between 180 DEG and 320 DEG C. and selected from the groups consisting of (a) ultra-violet light absorbers, (b) antioxidants, (c) free-radicle inhibitors and (d) metal ion inhibitors. The substances used in the examples are (a) pigments such as 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzophenone, 2,21-dihydroxy-4-methoxy-benzophenone, carbon black, 2-mercapto-benzimidazole + 2,21-dihydroxy-3,31 di[1-methylcyclohexyl]-4,41-dimethyl-diphenyl-methane, and paraphenylenediamine; (b) phenolic and amine compounds such as 2,21-dihydroxy-3,31 - di[1 - methylcyclohexyl] - 4,41 - dimethyl - diphenylmethane, 2,21-dimethyl-4,41-dihydroxy-5, 51-ditertiarybutyl-diphenyl sulphide, paraphenylenediamine, and N-lauryl-para-amino-phenol; (c) carbon black; and (d) metal complexing, sequestering and chelating agents such as the mixture of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole with 2,21 -dihydroxy - 3,31-di[1-methyl - cyclohexyl] - 4,41-dimethyl-diphenyl methane. The examples compare the properties of fibres (with and without said additives) which are formed by spinning and then drawing. An application specified is the production of ropes.
