Abstract

996,228. Pipe joint. BTR INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 2, 1964 [June 4, 1963], No. 22254/63. Heading F2G. In one embodiment of the invention a spigot and socket joint comprises a spigot member 3 which is axially slidable, to a limited extent, in a socket 4 characterized in that the spigot enters axially into the mouth of the socket, a circumferential enlargement 8 is situated on the spigot member behind the spigot to form a piston, and a cylinder 12 in which the piston slides is provided by a sleeve which projects from the socket mouth and has an internal flange 14 making sliding engagement with the spigot member 9 behind the piston to constitute the cylinder head, the space between the piston and the head being in communication with the interior of the joint members by means of a port 18. Sealing rings 15, 16, 6 may be situated between the flange 14 and the spigot member, the piston and the sleeve and the socket and spigot. Preferably the sleeve 12 is removable and the side of the piston nearest the spigot 3 is open to the atmosphere. In a second embodiment a ball-and-socket universal pipe joint has an external flange 32 on the ball 30 working in an annular groove in the socket, the peripheries of the flange and of the groove being spherical and making a fluidtight joint and the side of the groove remote from the pipe carrying the socket is open to the internal pressure of the joints and the side of the groove adjacent that pipe is open to the surrounding pressure.
