Abstract

996,153. Knitting-machines. NAGATA SEIKI CO. Ltd. April 16, 1962 [April 15, 1961; June 12, 1961], No. 14548/62. Heading D1C. The length of fabric produced by a knitting- machine is controlled by detecting, by photoelectric means, the leading edge of the fabric before it reaches its final length, and using the signal from these means to vary the length if necessary. A circular knitting machine has a transparent tube 9 through which the stocking being produced is drawn pneumatically between two light sources 10, 11, and their corresponding photo-cells 12, 13. The sources are energized by a cam operated switch 18 when the stocking edge should have reached level A. If the stocking is short, cell 12 emits a signal; if the stocking is too long the cell 13 is obscured. The signal or lack of signal to amplifier 19 causes energization of the appropriate solenoid 20, 21 to rotate screw 6 to respectively lower or raise the needle cylinder to decrease or increase the stitch density. In another embodiment the holder 14,15 for the sources and cells is arranged to rotate and descend as the stocking is produced, the photo-electric means thus traversing a helical path to scan the fabric continuously or intermittently and produce a more regular course spacing.
