Abstract
995,919. Valves; pipe joints. S. G. ROSS. Aug. 2, 1963 [July 27, 1962], No. 28957/62. Headings F2G and F2V. A vent valve of the shuttle type is mounted vertically with its lower port 14 or 15 connected to the highest point in a liquid system whilst the upper port 15 or 14 leads to a tank or drain; when the system is not under pressure the shuttle closure 20 engages the lower seat 19 to prevent ingression of air into the system. Upon pressurizing the system any air therein lifts the closure 20 and escapes past flats 23, 24 on the latter through the upper port; after expulsion of the air, liquid enters the valve and carries the shuttle 20 on to the upper seat 18. Any subsequent entry of air into the system will displace liquid in the valve and when the shuttle lies wholly in air it will fall and allow the air to escape. The shuttle closure may comprise a ball. The seats are of resilient material, e.g. nylon or metal, and the ports 14, 15 are taper threaded for connections to pipes. The ports may be formed in spigot members which are held in the end of the body by circlips in aligned grooves; seat rings are provided in the spigots. These spigots may be formed with external hexagonal surface. The closure may be made of aluminium or magnesium alloy, brass, bronze, stainless steel or mild steel.
