886,807. Indicating liquid levels. SEETRU Ltd. Jan. 8, 1959 [Jan. 13, 1958], No. 1113/58. Class 123(1). The lower end of a liquid level sight gauge 6 communicates with the liquid in a fuel tank 1 by means of a valve body 4 which is screwed, and sealed by a gland 26, within a socket 2 welded at 3 within an opening in a wall of the tank 1 and carries, on its outer end, a ported collar 5 of the sight gauge 6, the collar, which is retained by a nut 16, carries sealing glands 28, 29. A plunger valve 11, slidable in a retainer 12 secured by a circlip 13 within the inner end of the valve body 4, is urged by a compression spring 14, and also by the hydrostatic pressure of the fuel in the tank 1, on to a frusto-conical seat 15 within the body 4, the pressure of the liquid acting through ports 17 located at the inner end of the valve body. A push rod 21, with a finger piece 22 and slidable within the valve body can be pushed inwardly against a spring 23 to unseat the valve 11 when a level reading is to be taken. Sealing glands 24, 25 are located respectively between a cylindrical surface of the push rod and the inner surface of the body 4 and between the outer face of the latter and a retaining nut 16. The upper end of the gauge glass 6 has a nipple 33 arranged in a socket 32. In a modification the valve body portion protruding within the tank carries a filter and the threaded portion of the body 3 which engages the socket 2 is located more outwardly adjacent the shoulder which engages the outer face of the socket 2. The socket 2 may be externally screw-threaded and secured by a lock nut to the tank 1. Specification 809,828 is referred to.
