Class 97(3) An attachment for inserting a thermocouple into a container comprises a tubular body adapted to be secured to the container wall, and a plug internally screw-threaded in to the tubular body with a fluid tight seal, the plug having an axial bore for the passage of the thermocouple wires, the thermocouple tube being connected to the inner end of the plug with a fluid tight seal co-acting with the exterior of the tube to prevent leakage from the container into the bore. In the form shown the tubular body 12 is welded over an aperture in the wall 13. The body has two internal diameters with a tapered seat 18 between them. The body is internally screw-threaded at 26 to receive the plug 24 having a bore 37 and a tapered portion grooved to receive a packing ring 32 engaging the tapered seat 18. The packing ring is retained by a nut 33 having a locking screw 36. An O-ring seal is provided in a groove 28, a passage 69 communicating with the space between the two seals. A coupling member 38 is secured to the threaded stem 34 at the bottom of the plug 24, being locked by the screw 42, and has an internal bore 44 opening into a tapered portion 43 which engages the flared end 47 of the thermocouple tube. A seal with the tube is provided by a resilient packing element 48 compressed by a nut 50 secured by a screw 51. The thermocouple wires pass through the bore 37, the upper end of which is enlarged to receive a tapered screw threaded plug 54 having an O-ring seal 59. The wires pass through a bore in this plug, and, as a protection against the escape of fluid in the event of breakage of the thermocouple tube, the wires are sealed by a resilient packing element 61 compressed by a screw nipple 63. Such breakage is indicated by escape of fluid from a vent 68. The outer end of the plug is hexagon shaped at 29 and undercut at 67. This provides for cooperation with a device secured to the external screw-thread 22 for removing the whole plug assembly while fluid pressure is applied.
