Abstract

995,908. Supply circuits for discharge lamps. CAPS RESEARCH Ltd. April 3, 1963 [March 27, 1962], No. 11757/62. Heading H2H. A mercury arc discharge lamp 25 is started by high-frequency pulses generated by a pushpull transistor oscillator 4 and superimposed on the output from the winding of an autotransformer 1, a switch 11 operating after a predetermined time to connect the lamp 25 and its ballast choke 26 to only half the autotransformer winding for normal running. The oscillator 4 is supplied from the autotransformer 1 through a rectifier bridge 3 which also supplies the windings 5, 6, 7 associated respectively with locking switches 8, 9, a thermal delay switch 12 and the switch 11, the positions of these switches when the circuit is unenergized being as shown in the drawing. Closure of a main switch 2 energizes the oscillator 4 and windings 6, 7, and causes instantaneous engagement of contacts 22, 23, 24 followed by permanent engagement of contacts 22, 24 to connect members 25, 26 and the secondary winding 21 of the oscillator transformer 19 in series across the autotransformer 1. Striking of the lamp 25 reduces the oscillator open loop gain below unity to damp the oscillations, the output of autotransformer 1 being sufficient to maintain the lamp current, and the oscillations increasing to their initial value should the lamp go out, thereby causing restriking. After a predetermined time the delay switch 12 operates to de-energize the windings 6, 7 and energize the winding 5 which is locked by the respective opening and closing of its contacts 8, 9. Deenergization of winding 7 causes engagement of contacts 23, 24 and their subsequent separation from contact 22 to disconnect the winding 21 and connect members 25, 26 to approximately half of the winding of autotransformer 1. An electromagnetically controlled air valve whose winding 28 is responsive to the lamp voltage is operated to supply cooling air to the lamp when its arc voltage has risen to the normal operating value. The oscillator 4 remains energized after the switch 12 has operated and is inhibited by a resistor 27 which also prevents arcing between the contacts 22, 24. Striking of the lamp 25 causes the core of transformer 19 to be driven into saturation.
