Abstract

925,033. Supply circuits for discharge lamps ; inductors. FERGUSON RADIO CORPORATION Ltd. Feb. 26, 1962 [March 7, 1961], No. 8317/61. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). A fluorescent lamp 30, supplied from a battery-operated, push-pull transistor power converter 10 producing a square wave output of frequency about 1000 cycles/sec., has a ballast impedance device 32 comprising two saturable reactors 36 whose windings 46 are connected in series so that positive and negative half-cycles of current tend to drive the reactors respectively out of saturation by a barium ferrite permanent slab magnet 44 which fills a skewed gap 42 in the reactor core 40 made of magnetically-soft material. The ballast impedance 32 also serves as the starting inductance to strike the lamp 30 on opening of the starter switch 34.
