Abstract

The drawing qualities of metallic coated low carbon (max. 0.1%) iron or steel sheet or strip are improved, and the non-ageing properties restored, by subjecting the coated sheet or strip to a box anneal at 400-850 DEG F. for at least 4 hours, the temperature employed being such that the coating metal will not alloy with the iron or steel base material or form additional alloys not already present on the coated sheet or strip. The box anneal may be conducted prior to any cold rolling or roller levelling for producing desired temper and flatness. In particular, the box anneal is carried out at a maximum soaking temperature of 500 DEG F. for teme plate, 550 DEG F. for zinc coated, 650 DEG F. for aluminium and Al-Si coated, 750 DEG F. for Zn alloy coated, and 850 DEG F. for Al and Al-Si alloy coated iron or steel sheet or strip. For zinc or Zn-Fe coatings, the box anneal is conducted in a protective atmosphere e.g. consisting of 4-8% H2 by volume and balance N2, or dissociated ammonia gas, or by volume 9% CO, 6% CO2, 12% H2 and balance N2.
