995,688. Blowing lances. D. N. MANTON. May 26, 1964 [June 22, 1963], No. 24929/63. Heading F4B. An oxygen lance 10 in which means are provided for effecting controlled adjustment of the area of its outlet, comprises three coaxial tubes 11, 12, 13 and an end portion 14 having six integrally formed radial fins 15, welded together so that the passageways between the tubes define water return channels. Cooling water passes through a centrally disposed supply pipe 16, having an enlarged frusto-conical steel head 17 containing a U-shaped communicating passage, via a copper-chromium alloy or stainless steel helical coil 18 to the water return channels. An externally threaded portion 22 of the pipe 16 is located in a support 21 attached to a bracket 20 welded to the innermost tube 13, which support 21 is urged against a nut 23 by helical coil 18, so that rotation of nut 23 moves pipe 16 axially to adjust the outlet area of the divergent oxygen stream which flows between tubes 13 and 16, out through the helical gaps between the spirals of coil 18. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown), the water supply pipe position is adjusted either manually or by remote control by a screw mechanism extending through the lance. In further modifications (Figs. 3, 4, not shown), the pipes 11, 12, 13 define water supply and return passageways and the oxygen flows between pipe 13 and a central rod, fitted with a frusto-conical enlarged head, which is axially adjustable to define with the end portion 14 an annular outlet of adjustable area. The rod may be mounted in an internally threaded support attached by a bracket to the tube 13. The lance end portions 14 may be removable, and means may be provided for feeding other materials as well as oxygen simultaneously through the lance.
