Abstract
1,154,177. Gas blowing lances. GES. ZUR FORDERUNG DER EISENHUTTENTECHNIK m.b.H. 1 Dec., 1966 [30 Dec., 1965], No. 53906/66. Heading F4B. A lance for blowing gases into metal melts in a furnace comprises an outer tube 1 within which is disposed a tube 8 ending in a flow guide member 20 having helical channels 22, the outlet 19 of the lance having a lip 23, the lip and flow guide acting to form a bellshaped gas jet. The tube 8 is slidable within the outer tube 1 to vary the width of the gas jet, and may be axially reciprocated. The flow guide 20 is formed also with an axial bore 21 which may be connected to a gas feed pipe separate from that supplying the helical channels 22, the flow of gas within which may be separately controlled. The tip of the lance between 28 and 29 is coated with nickel-chromium alloy and alternate layers of molybdenum and zirconium oxide. The lance is cooled by a fluid in concentric channels 17, 18 formed in the tube 1, the channels narrowing at the tip to increase the velocity and hence the effectiveness of the cooling fluid. The surface of the inner wall 15 of the cooling channels is coated with chromium. The outer tube 1 is supported by a frame (3, Fig. 1) and the inner tube (8) is connected to a hose (5) supported by pivotally mounted arms (4). The tube 8 may be lifted by hydraulic pistons.
