Description
May 28, 1963 w. F. CLARK, JR
SCARFING BURNER TORCH TIP Filed April 19, 1960 High Pressure PIE-.- 1 Oxygen lNl/E/VTOR WILL/AM E CLARK, Jr. 1 gmafigdau Aflomey United States Patent Jersey Filed Apr. 19, 1960, Ser. No. 23,191 1 Claim. (Cl. 158-27.4)
The present invention relates generally to burner torches and more particularly has as its primary object the provision of an improved burner torch tip especially suitable for use in scarfing metal workpieces.
These and other objects will become more apparent after referring to the following specification and attached drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the burner torch tip of the invention installed in the nozzle of a scarfing burner torch; and
FIGURE 2 is an end view takenalong the plane of line 11-11 of FIGURE 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings reference numeral 2 designates the nozzle of an oxy-acetylene scarfing torch having the torch tip of the invention, designated generally by reference numeral 4, fitted therein. The tip 4 is retained within the nozzle by means of an exteriorly threaded sleeve portion 6 of a out 8 circumferentially attached to the main body portion 10 of the tip 4 intermediate its rearward end 12 and forward end 14. The main body portion 10 is preferably made of copper.
A central passageway 16 for high pressure oxygen extends longitudinally of the main body 10. A plurality of longitudinal passageways 18 are disposed radially around the passageway 16 for conducting acetylene and pre heat oxygen to the forward end of the main body portion 10.
All of the features thus far described are conventional and are not claimed as my invention the details of which will now be described.
The inside diameter of the wear ring 20 is slightly larger than the outside diameter of the main body 10 so as to provide a clearance space 22 to permit expansion and contraction of the wear ring relative to the main body. I
The forward end 14 of the body 10 is in the shape of 3,091,281 Patented May 28, 1963 a circumferential flange 24 having an outer periphery which curves rear-wardly of the main body 10 and extends over the forward face of the wear ring. The flange 24 may be in the form of a copper weld laid down over the forward face of the wear ring and fused to the main body or it may be in the form of an extension of the main body 10 spun back onto the wear ring, as desired. The latter arrangement is illustrated in the drawing.
The high heat-conducting properties of the copper body 10 are utilized by means of the flange 24 to prevent cracking and spalling of the wear ring. The flange 24 also protects the wear ring. from direct exposure to the flame issuing from the torch tip. The space 22 between the wear ring and the main body 10 provides clearance for the unequal expansion and contraction of the Stellite wear ring as compared with the copper main body portion.
While one embodiment of my invention has been shown and described, it will be apparent that other adaptations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the following claim. i
I claim:
In a scarfing torch tip adapted to be fitted into the nozzle of a scarfing torch, said scarfing torch tip including an elongated body portion having rearward and forward ends and at least one fluid passageway extending between said end the improvement therewith of a wear ning oircumferentially disposed around said body portion adjacent said forward end, said wear ring having an inside diameter slightly larger than the outside diameter of said body portion whereby a clearance space for relative expansion of said body portion and said wear ring is defined between said body and said ring, the axial length of said wear ring being substantially less than the axial length of said body portion, said wear ring being made of a wear resistant material, and a circumferential flange on said body portion surrounding said forward end thereof and extending over the forward face of said wear ring, the outer periphery of said flange being curved rearwardly a short distance of said Wear ring and secured thereto, said flange being made of a material softer and of 'higher thermal conductivity than said wear ring.
