Description

of course be substantially flat over a limited area if the spindle head be hemispherical. Preferably the spindle head carries a small relatively sharp conical projection on its end surface and in alinement with its axis. This projection at its base is slightly smaller than the outlet openiner so as not. to inter ferewith the free escape of the tiuid, but at the salue time to tend to guide the several streams through the out t from the ends ot the grooves. The main object of this conica-l projection or point is to prevent the outlet from getting` clogged or to clear it should it become clogged. The spindle may be moved back and forth so as to project the pointlti through the outlet and clear the latter of|any obstruction. It normally projects a short distance during,r the use of the device. The outlet may vary somewhat in size for the same nozzle as shown in Figs. 3, 4. and 5 for different fuels or different delivery pressiue.
One important feature of my nozzle is its adaptability for use in forming' a substantially fiat, tan-shaped spray when such is desired in. preference to the conical. spray. Any suitable means may be provided for supper-tiner the spindle at its rear end and permitting of the removal or longitudinal adjustment thereof. As shown the rear end of the body 10 carries a removable sleeve 19 held in place by a threaded collar 20 screw infa on to the body and binding' a flange of said sleeve, against the end of the body. By unscrcwina this collar 20 the spindle and sleeve ma) be removed from the body Without eii'ccting' the relative adjustment of the sleeve. and spindle. The spindle is screw threaded within the sleeve and the sleeve at its outer end carries a suitable packing gland t'or prtnlcnting' the escape of fluid past the threads. As the sleeve is normally held against longitudinal movement a rotation of the spindle will etlect an adjustment of the spindle head in respect to the outlet opening 13. The cap 12 may be rotated to get the desired relative positioning' of the parts if desired instead of rotating the spindle.
Intermediate of the ends ofthe atomizer body 10 is a boss 22 to which a supply conduit 23 may be connected and this conduit closely adjacent to the nozzle carries a suitable valve 24 for shutting off theI supply to the noazle. The body also preferably has cast integral therewith a lug' 25 provided with a 'transverse openingr 26 adapted, to facilitate locking of the nozzle in the desired position in respectto the furnace. Adjacent to the supporting lug 25 and the supply conduit is preferably an annular Harige 27 which may tit and close the opening to the combustion chamber through which the nozzle is insertedi .lt is of course evident that my improved atomizing nozzle may be used in connection with various types of heating furnaces as well as steam boilers and it is also evident that various changes within the scope of the appended claims may be made inthe construction of the nozzle itself Without departing from the spirit of my invention.

A. liquid fuel atomizer burner including a. body portion having' a Vsmooth-surfaced, substantially cylindrical bore terminating in a smooth-surfaced, substantially hemispherical chamber with an outlet at the center; of the latten the peripheral .Wall around said outletj iresenting,` a substantial knife edge, an inner member' having a headv including1 a cylindrical portion substantially fitting said c vlimlrieal bore and a substantially hemisphercal portion adapted to lit within said hemispheri .al chamber and presenting a eomjmratively small pointed projection no1'- mally extending' through said outlet, said cylindrical portion having a` series of helical grooves and said hen'iispherical portion having' a vseries of helico-spiral grooves terminatiupr adjacent to the brise of said projection.

A. liquid fuel atomizing burner includmame@ e ing a easing or body having a fluid-delivery passage terminating in an outlet, an adjustable member Within said passage for causing,` the liquid to swirl as it emerges from said outlet, the outer end surface of said casingr beingl substantially flat in a plane at right angles to the axis of said passage and two members secured to said surface upon opp0- site sides of said outlet and each including a flange extending' outwardly from said sur face and adjustable toward and from each other to give the emerging spray a substantially Hat fan-shaped form.
3. A liquidfuel atomizing burner inoluding a casing or body having a luiddelivery passage terminating in an outlet, an adjustable member Within said passage for eausing the liquid to swirl as` it emergesfrom said outlet, the outer end surface of said casing being substantially flat in a plane at right angles to the axis 01' said passage and two members secured to said surface upon opposite sides of said outlet and each. including a flange extending outwardly from said surace andv adjustable toward and from each other to give the emerging' spray a substantially Hat fan-shaped form., said members being adjustabletoward and from said outlet along said. surface and each presenting a notched outer edge.
