Abstract
995,452. Gas lighters. FLAMINAIRE MARCEL QUERCIA. June 22, 1962 [June 29, 1961], No. 24052/62. Heading F4F. A gas lighter in which a removable reservoir 1 contains a discharge valve opened by pushing a valve stem 2 into the reservoir comprises a housing 5 in which the reservoir 1 is disposed such that it can be displaced to push the stem 2 against the inner wall of the housing and a resilient annular sealing member 9 disposed around the stem 2 at one end and at the other end around a conduit 7 formed in the lighter body and leading to a burner 8. The housing 5 is formed by two half shells 3, 4, the shell 4 having an aperture 11 covered by a flexible leather diaphragm 10 for displacing the reservoir. A rigid part 12 may be fitted to the diaphragm 10. As the valve stem 2 is depressed, the resilient member 9 which is preferably fixed to the housing 5 is deformed and acts as a return spring for the reservoir. In another embodiment the wall of one half shell is made deformable by either forming in it a circular corrugation, the thickness of the wall being reduced at the corrugation (Fig. 2, not shown), or by providing it with cuts (Fig. 3, not shown) if made of stamped metal sheet. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), a plate is mounted in an opening in the half shell and has peripheral bent tongues which slide in slots in the half shell. In a still further embodiment, Fig. 7, the reservoir 1 is pivoted against a fixed lug 17 on the housing and is displaced by a spring-urged lug 16 on a control member 18A which pivots about an axis 24. A pin 19A on the control member slidably engages an oblique slot 22A in a vertically sliding hood 20A. The latter has a notch 23 to expose the burner 8 when in the operating position. An arcuate slot 25 in the member 18A is concentric about the axis 24 and allows the lug 16 to be pivoted clear of the reservoir 1 to facilitate removal. The control member instead of being pivotally mounted may slide in the body parallel to the axis of the valve stem. In a final embodiment, Fig. 10, the reservoir is displaced by a lug 16A on a control member 18B travelling from the periphery of the reservoir over its convex bulging wall. The control member 18B is pivoted at 27 and carries a hood 20B. A pin 28 on the member 18B parallel to the axis 27 slidably engages an arcuate slot in a fixed plate 36 concentric about the axis 27. A slidably mounted U-shaped box 29 contains a spring which urges the box against the pin 28 and due to the contour of the box, the cover 20B is maintained either in its fully open or closed position. The spring also urges a flint against a friction wheel.
