Abstract
995,266. Electron multipliers; image converter tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. (Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken N.V.). Nov. 16, 1962, No. 43478/62. Heading H1D. In an electronic image intensifier, a dynode comprises aligned grids G 1 , G 2 and a secondaryemissive grid G 3 arranged one behind the other and having potentials such that primary electrons reaching the dynode are focused by the electric field between the grids on to the last grid G 3 , the impact surfaces of which are arranged centrally relative to the aperture in grids G 1 , G 2 . As shown, each grid comprises coplanar parallel wires, the distance between grids G 1 , G 2 being of the order of the wire spacing, while the distance between G 2 , G 3 is several times greater. The grids G 2 , G 3 are at the same potential, which may be the potential of the first grid of the preceding dynode, while grid G 1 is at a higher potential, so that secondary electrons produced by electrons incident on the wires of grid G 1 are lost, while the remaining incoming electrons all produce secondary electrons at G 3 , and electrons leaving the dynode have only a small spread of velocities. Each dynode may be made by winding wire around two frames arranged together; detaching the frames from one another to provide two grid parts having parallel wires; removing every second wire from one grid part to form G 1 ; arranging the even-numbered wires of the other grid part in one plane and the odd-numbered wires in another plane, by the insertion of spacers, to form G 2 or G 3 ; and securing the frames together with the desired spacing and with the wires of G 1 and G 2 in alignment.
