Abstract

The invention comprises steroids of the general formula <FORM:0994885/C2/1> wherein R represents an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl radical, and the preparation thereof by reacting 3,20-diketo - 6a - methyl - 17a - acetoxy - 4 - pregnene with methyl or ethyl orthoformate in the presence of a strong mineral acid or an organic sulphonic acid in the presence of a solvent to form the 3-methyl or 3-ethyl ether respectively of the above formula. The C3 to C8 alkyl enol ethers of the above formula are prepared by refluxing 3,20 - diketo - 6a - methyl - 17a -acetoxy-4-pregnene with the required alcohols in the presence of an organic sulphonic acid preferably p-toluenesulphonic acid, and removing water from the reaction mixture. Pharmaceutical compositions useful as oral progestogens contain as the active ingredient steroids of the above general formula
