An hydraulic pump or motor comprises a multi-port body 1, a driving disc 3 rotatably mounted in the body 1, a shaft 5 connected to the disc, an angularly adjustable port block 6, a cylinder block 14 rotatably supported on the port block 6 and piston rods 20 each having a ball and socket connection 21, 22 with the disc 3. The driving disc is journalled in a bearing 30 in the body 1 and the radial thrust components due to the obliquity of the pistons is countered by the radial reaction of the bearing 30. Pressure liquid passes through axial passages 34 in the piston rods 20 and through passages 33 to recesses 32 formed in the driving disc 3. The pressure liquid acts against a thrust bearing 31 to counteract the axial thrust components. Recesses may also be provided in the thrust bearing 31 registering with the recesses 32 (Fig. 3, not shown). The driving disc is held against the thrust bearing by a spring 35. A stem 17, having universal joint connections 17a, 17b couples the shaft 5 to the cylinder block 14 and a spring 9 in a telescopic unit maintains the ends of the stem 17 in contact with spherical seatings 18a, 18b and the port block 6 with the cover 2. The piston stroke of the pump may be varied by means of a pressure operable piston 10 acting against a spring 12.
