994,529. Clutch control; resilient couplings. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. March 21, 1963 [March 23, 1962], No. 11277/63. Headings F2L and F2U. A pneumatically, hydraulically or electromagnetically operated motor-vehicle friction clutch 2 manually controlled through a pedalactuated valve 21, or switch, is automatically disengaged on overload by a torque-limiting device comprising electrical contacts 7, 8 (Fig. 2, not shown), secured respectively to the outer plate 3 and centre hub 5, of a torsionallyresilient clutch plate, which at a predetermined torque, relatively angularly deflect to close the contacts and energize a solenoid 13 thereby operating a valve 14, or switch, to by-pass the manual control valve 21 and disengage the clutch. As shown, the spring-engaged clutch is pneumatically disengaged by a servo-cylinder 18 energized from a reservoir 19 through the pedal-operated valve 21. When torque overload closes contacts 7, 8, a plunger 23 of the by-pass valve 14 is moved by the solenoid 13 to open a circuit 24, 24a thereby overriding the manual control valve 21 and automatically disengaging the clutch, re-engagement being effected only after manually re-shifting the plunger 23 to its former position (Fig. 3, not shown) whereby manual control is restored, the by-pass valve plunger 23 being arranged for operation by the pedal 22 for this purpose. The contacts 7, 8 are arranged to close at approximately 1À5 times maximum engine torque.
