994,480. Shoe boxes. B. V. WIGEMARK, and E. H. FERKINGHOFF. March 23, 1962 [June 3, 1961; Feb. 7, 1962], No. 11260/62. Heading B8P. A shoe box comprises an open-topped body portion 1 and a detachable lid 2 having a central part 3 covering the open top and side parts 5 ... 8 gripping over the border of the top, one side part 5 of the lid covering substantially the whole of one side of the body portion and having a slot 18 through which passes a handle 17 on the box body. The ends of the handle 17 may pass through slots in the side of the box body and are retained by plates 15. In use, when the shoe boxes are stacked on a shelf &c. the lid is reversed from the position shown so that the large side 5 covers the side of the box opposite to the side carrying the handle, indicia on the handle side thus being visible. When a box 1 is withdrawn, e.g. the bottom box of a pile, Fig. 9, the lid remains behind on the shelf to support the boxes above. After sale the shoes are packed in the box and the lid fitted over the handle as shown in Fig. 1 and secured to the rear wall of the box by cut-out tongues and slits or by a pronged fastener. In a modification the handle comprises a cut-out and bent-up portion of the wall of the box. Instead of reversing the lid, the side 5 of the lid with the slot for the handle may be creased and folded within the lid so that indicia on the side of the box body is visible when the box is on the shelf.
