994,360. Snap-action retractive switches; thermal switches; fluid actuation of switches. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. June 16, 1961 [July 5, 1960], No. 21877/61. Heading H2B. A snap-action switch, of the type comprising a W-shaped spring blade member 22 whose two outer arms 24, 26 are forced inwards and whose central arm carries a contact 30-32 movable between two fixed contacts 88, 96 engaging positions by applying force to the outer arms 24, 26, is mounted upon a base 42, 44 slidably entered into one end of a tubular housing member 12 whose other end is closed by a flexible diaphragm 100 carrying an actuating member 106. The base consists of a glass portion 44 bonded to a metal portion 42 whose thin rim 43 is welded to the housing 12 at 45 to hermetically seal the housing. The position of the base in the housing is adjusted on assembly to set the operating point which is dependent upon the force of diaphragm 100. The tubular housing 12 is shaped to support a motion transmitting member 140 and a back stop 130 for the diaphragm 100. In modifications the button 106 may be omitted and the switch operated directly by gas pressure on the diaphragm or the diaphragm itself may be of bimetal or trimetal. The diaphragm itself may be snap-acting.
