994,323. Moulding refractory bodies. G. M. GRITTI. Sept. 6, 1962 [June 12, 1962], No. 34161/62. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B3] In a method of forming hollow or solid refractory bodies, a preformed uncompressed body is placed in a forming die and axially pressed by means of a pneumatic fly press acting on the die parts with an instantaneous impulse obtained by actuating at least one of the die parts pneumatically with cylinders having a very fast inlet and outlet of the fluid. The preformed body is placed in a housing 14 over a mandrel 19 to form an axial cavity and is compressed by a top die member 10 supported by a table 5 moved vertically by pneumatic rapid-action cylinders 7, 7<SP>1</SP>. The lower die member 13 is supported from the table by tie bars 8, 8<SP>1</SP> so that it acts as an ejector. In a modification for making bodies with recesses at right angles, Fig. 7, lateral mould parts 14, 14<SP>1</SP> are actuated by pneumatic units 44, 44<SP>1</SP> and carry hollow die members 51. The top die part 10 carries a hollow mandrel 40 the bore of which is closed by a poppet valve through which compressed air flows during retraction of the mandrel to discharge excess refractory through the axial bores of the lateral die member 51.
