In a pressure-increasing device for water conduit systems, which has a centrifugal pump coupled to an electric motor 6 cooled by water flowing through a pipe in which the pump is installed, the pump impeller 4 rotates outside the liquid flow proper so that it does not form any flow resistance in the conduit when the device is switched off. The pump may be built into the conduit system in a horizontal or a vertically upward or downward direction. The motor 6 is filled with cooling water and additionally it may have a cooling jacket 15 subjected to the water pressure in the conduit system. The motor shaft 5 is supported by bearings 10, 11 and a thrust bearing 12. In an alternative embodiment (not shown), the motor-pump unit is mounted by webs coaxially within a large diameter duct connected upstream and downstream with a smaller diameter conduit.
