Abstract

Copolymers of vinyl acetate and a methylpentene-1 may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a free radical catalyst. The preferred methylpentene-1 is 4-methylpentene-1. The polymerization may be effected batchwise or continuously in aqueous emulsion in the presence of alkali metal or ammonium persulphates, optionally together with promoters, e.g. dodecyl mercaptan, dimethylaniline or sodium metabisulphite, and emulsifiers not likely to hydrolyse the vinyl acetate, e.g. sodium octylbenzene sulphonate, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, ammonium stearate, polyethylene glycol monostearate, sorbitol monostearate and methyl cellulose, and buffers, e.g. alkali metal hydrogen phosphates, and the copolymer precipitated with formic acid, hydrochloric acid or aluminium sulphate. Alternatively polymerization may be effected in bulk in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate or azodiisobutyronitile and the product recovered by pouring the reaction mixture into methanol or petroleum ether. Examples describe the copolymerization of vinyl acetate and 4-methyl-pentene-1 in aqueous emulsion in the presence of ammonium persulphate, together with (1 to 3, 6 to 8, 11, 11, 17 to 19 and 27) sodium dioctyl sulpho-succinate and tertiarydodecyl mercaptan, (4) sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate and sodium metabisulphite, (5 and 9) sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate and (12 to 16) polyethylene glycol monofatty acid ester and tertiary-dodecyl mercaptan; and in bulk in the presence of (20) lauroyl peroxide, (21 to 24) diisopropyl-peroxydicarbonate and (25 and 26) azodiisobutyronitrile.
