Abstract

Vinyl chloride - isobutylene copolymers are described having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.7-1.5 and an isobutylene content of 0.3-3% by weight. They are obtained by copolymerizing in bulk or aqueous dispersion a mixture of 0.5-3.5% of isobutylene with 99.5-96.5% of vinyl chloride at 20-60 DEG C. with a monomer soluble catalyst, e.g. azodiisobutyronitrile, acetyl cyclohexane sulphonyl peroxide, diisopropyl or dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonate, dilauroyl peroxide or tert.-butyl perpivalate. Dispersion polymerization is effected using a protective colloid, e.g. methylcellulose and buffers to maintain a pH of 3-11.
