Abstract

Stable, aqueous, freeze-thaw resistant dispersions of an olefine polymer containing more than 40% solids are made by emulsifying in water at room temperature or 100-125 DEG C. under pressure a solution of the polymer in an organic solvent in the presence of 1-30% of a non-ionic emulsifier and/or 0.01-20% of an ionic emulsifier, and 0.01-20% of a creaming agent which is a polymer containing -OSO3M or -SO3M groups where M is an alkali metal or ammonium ion, the organic solvent is then removed by distillation and the dispersions are concentrated by creaming. The polymer may be an ethylene/propylene copolymer of molar ratio 80: 20 to 50: 50. The creaming agent may be the alkali metal or ammonium salt of, a polyethylene polysulphonic acid, a polyvinyl alcohol polysulphuric acid ester, a polystyrene polysulphonic acid or a polyvinyl alcohol acetalized with butyraldehyde sulphonic acids. The non-ionic emulsifier may be a condensation product of aliphatic or aralkyl alcohols or phenols with 1-50 mols. ethylene oxide. The ionic emulsifier is a compound containing -COOM or -SO3M groups, where m is an alkali metal, e.g. an oleate, stearate or lauryl sulphate, or a salt of the sulphuric acid esters of the above ethylene oxide condensates, and the ionic emulsifier may be prepared in situ.
