Abstract
Water-insoluble polyether-polyacid products which contain no neutralized carboxylic acid groups are made by mixing from 7%-97% by weight of an organic acid polymer containing an average of at least 10 carboxylic acid groups, and no neutralized groups, in the polymer molecule and having an average of at least 1 carboxyl group for each 6 carbon atoms of the polymer excluding the carboxyl carbon atom, and from 93%-3% by weight of a polyether containing an average of at least 7 non-cyclic aliphatic ether linkages in the molecule and having, on the average, a ratio of etheric oxygen atoms to carbon atoms of at least 1-6, and if necessary baking the product so obtained at a temperature in the range of 150 DEG -225 DEG C. to render it water-insoluble. Polymeric acids specified are homopolymers of acrylic and methacrylic acids and copolymers of such acids with maleic acid, styrene, vinyl toluene, isobutylene, vinyl chloride and vinyl benzoate. Polyethers specified are polyethylene and polypropylene oxides and ethers thereof with alcohols, glycols, glycerol, sorbitol and phenols, copolymers of ethylene and propylene oxides with each other and with other olefine oxides such as epoxybutanes, isobutylene oxide and styrene oxide, polytrimethylene and polytetramethylene oxides, polyethers made by reacting olefine oxides with Novolaks, polyvinyl alcohol, starch, sucrose and methyl glucoside, polyethylene glycol chloride, polyethylene triol and polyvinyl methyl ether. The products may be made by direct mixing of the polyether and polyacid, but the mixing is preferably carried out in aqueous solution from which precipitation of the product may be inhibited by the addition of ammonia, amino compounds, e.g. N, N, N1, N1-tetrakis (2-hydroxypropyl) ethylene diamine, alkalies, hydrazine or solvents such as acetone, a mono-lower alkyl ether of an alkylene glycol, dioxane, diacetone alcohol, ethanol, dimethyl sulphoxide, acetic acid and acrylic acid. The precipitation of the products from such solutions may be effected by appropriate treatment, e.g. heating, acidification or, in the case of solutions containing acetone, treatment with ferric chloride. The products are used in the production of films and coating which possess resistance to solvents and water.
