Abstract

The Specification comprises copolymers of vinyl acetate with a polyoxyalkylene compound which is defined as polyethylene glycol; polypropylene glycol; polybutylene glycol; a block copolymer of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol; a monoether of a lower alkyl alcohol with any of the said glycols or block copolymer, or a monoester of an aliphatic carboxylic acid with any of said glycols or block copolymer. These copolymers may be prepared by making a mixture of vinyl acetate and the appropriate polyoxyalkylene in proportions by weight ranging from 10 : 1-1 : 10 with 0,1%-16% benzoyl peroxide and polymerizing the mass at a temperature between 60 DEG C. and the reflux temperature. The product may be hydrolysed to give a vinyl alcohol copolymer by dissolving in methanol or ethanol, adding an alkaline alcoholysis catalysis and recovering the hydrolysed product. In examples, carbowaxes having approximate molecular weights of 600, 4,000, 6,000 and 20,000 are used as the polyoxyalkylene compounds.
