Abstract

A process for the manufacture of cyclohexanol by hydration in the liquid phase comprises hydrating cyclohexene in the presence of water and about 0.1 to 1.0% of emulsifier on a strongly acid cation exchange resin (i.e. containing sulphonic or phosphoric acid groups) at a temperature above 100 DEG C. and at elevated pressure in a closed system. Preferred emulsifiers are non-cation active e.g. ethoxylated ricinoleic acid, ethylphenol glycolether or alkylarylpolyether alcohol. Preferred cation exchange resins are those having a polystyrene matrix and sulpho groups as active groups. Examples are furnished. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
