Abstract
992,923. Microphones. ERIE RESISTOR CORPORATION. Sept. 7, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961], No. 34315/62. Heading H4J. A microphone comprises a housing 1 to which is secured the rim 7 of a diaphragm 8 having a frusto-conical portion 11 and a depressed circular centre portion 9, the portion 9 having secured to it a piezoelectric " bender " 10 which is centrally located and overhangs the centre portion 9. One conductor of an output cable 5 is connected to an electrode 14 while the other conductor is connected to an electrode 15 and to a plate 2 acting as an earth plate. " Bender " 10 comprises a metal plate 12 and a ceramic plate 13 cemented together. At electrode 14, plate 13 is polarized in the direction of arrow 18 and at electrode 15 plate 13 is polarized in the direction of arrow 19. " Bender 10 is tuned to a band of frequencies by means of a recess 10a, or by adjustment of its thickness or diameter. When excited, " bender " 10 oscillates about the centre portion and outer edge portions move up and down relatively to the centre portion. Frusto-conical portion 11 has a width equal to or less than one half the mean wavelength of the operating frequency band. Diaphragm 8 is sufficiently thin and flexible to be effectively decoupled from " bender " 10. " Bender " 10 may be circular, elliptical or rectangular. Electrodes may be provided on both sides. The casing 1 is waterproof.
