Abstract

A flame-proofing agent comprises a product having a bromine content of 50-85% by weight and obtained by brominating a mixture of 10-90% by weight of diphenyl and 90-10% by weight of diphenyl ether or by brominating such compounds separately and subsequently mixing them in these proportions. The reaction preferably takes place in an inert solvent in the presence of iron and water as catalysts. Gaseous chlorine is preferably present to oxidize the hydrogen bromide formed to bromine.ALSO:Plastics such as high-pressure polyethylene are rendered flameproof by incorporating therein an amount, corresponding to 3 to 20% by weight of bromine based on the final product, of a product having a bromine content of 50 to 85% and obtained by brominating a mixture of 10 to 90% by weight of diphenyl and 90 to 10% by weight of diphenyl ether or by brominating such compounds separately and subsequently mixing them in these proportions. Other materials such as antimony oxide may be added.
