Abstract

Porous filamentary cellulose acetate having a micro-rugose surface is made by diluting a solution of cellulose acetate with a proportion of a liquid precipitant miscible with the solution which proportion is only just insufficient to precipitate the cellulose acetate and introducing the resultant mixture in the form of a thin stream or multiplicity of streams into a stream or moving body of the same or another liquid precipitant or on to the surface of such a moving body of precipitant. The cellulose acetate solution may be obtained from a cellulose acetylation process. The precipitant may be water. The mixture and/or the precipitant may contain a precipitant-soluble surface-active agent. A stream of the mixture may be deposited against a weir over which a stream of the precipitant is flowing at a rate exceeding the rate of flow of the stream of mixture. The mixture may be deposited on to the surface of a rotating drum or moving band which surface is continually covered with a layer or a film of precipitant. The mixture may be deposited from one or more supply means adapted to reciprocate transversely or diagonally across the width of the surface of the drum or band. The combined motions of the drum or band and the supply means may cause a mat of criss-cross filaments to form, a proportion of the filaments being lightly bonded together at points of intersection.
