[Also in Divisions F2 and H2] An automatic washing machine selective twospeed driving arrangement comprises a geared electric motor 10 having at respective ends a high speed directly driven and a low speed indirectly driven stub shaft 11, 21 rotatably mounting gearing pulleys 13, 23 that are respectively coupled by a disc 12 to the shaft 11 and connected to an output pulley 51 by an overriding clutch 26.. 28 and furthermore are interconnected by an intermediate gearing disposed outside the motor housing and comprising belts 14, 23 and pulleys 32, 33 carried by a transmission shaft 31 mounted on the housing. The arrangement is shown in the condition of driving the machine drum not shown at a slow (washing) speed wherein the output pulley 51 is driven via an epicyclic gearing 20, the shaft 21, and a coupling 22 engaged by a compression spring 25. To rotate the drum at high speed for spin drying, energization of an electromagnet 41 moves a ball 43 to engage, against the force of a compression spring 15, the gear wheel 13 with the coupling disc 12 whereby the output pulley 51 is driven via the intermediate gearing 13, 32, 33, 23, and the overriding clutch 26. .28 moves the pulley 51 axially from the clutch disc 22 to disengage the slow speed drive. The overriding clutch comprises a steel ring 26 secured to the pulley 23 by bolts 27 which pass through arcuate slits in the output pulley 51, and steel balls 28 which move the latter axially away from the clutch disc 22 when they encounter the inclined surfaces of the ring 26. The shaft 31 is pivotally mounted on brackets 34 biased by compression springs to tension the V-belts 14, 23.
