Abstract
An electrochemical cell, wherein H1 is evolved at the cathode or wherein a fuel gas is absorbed at the cathode to produce electrical energy, contains a cathode which comprises a support formed from Fe or steel, a portion or the whole of the surface of which is conductively covered by a coating of an alloy consisting of Mo and one or two of the metals Fe, Co and Ni or consisting of W and either Fe or Co or two of the metals Fe, Co and Ni. The electrode may be used in the electrolysis of aqueous alkali metal halide to produce H2, Cl2 and caustic alkali or a chlorate or in the electrolysis of alkali metal iodide to produce iodate. The electrode may be in the form of wire, tube, rod, planar or curved sheet, perforated sheet, expanded metal, foraminous metal, gauze, porous, compacted or fused metal powder. Binary alloys of Mo/Co or Mo/Fe contain 5-70% Mo, of W/Co contain 5-66% W, of W/Fe contain 5-60% W, and of Mo/Ni contain 5-65% Mo. Ternary alloys contain 5-60% Mo or W. The alloy may be applied to the support by electroplating; by sintering a mixture of the powdered alloy metals under the application of heat, with or without pressure; by roll bonding; vacuum depositing; metal spraying or rolling the powdered alloy or a mixture of the powdered metals on to the metal sheet; or by painting a metallizing solution of the alloy on to a metal sheet and subsequently firing, where the metals of the alloy coating are applied in a finely divided form in an organic solvent resin system. Prior to electroplating the Fe or steel support may be degreased and treated with HCl. For electroplating W alloys, either WO3 or a soluble tungstate is used together with a salt of the codepositing metal. Hydroxy organic acids, e.g. citric or tartaric, or their Na and K salts may be added to complex the Fe group metals, NH4Cl and (NH4)2SO4 may be added and some baths also comprise NaCl or KCl. Mo alloy plating baths are similar to the W plating baths with MoO3 or a soluble molybdate replacing the analagous W compounds. The pH may be adjusted with NH4OH or NaOH solutions. Some baths may contain Na4P2O7, NaHCO3 and N2H4.H2SO4. Laboratory experiments using the electrodes are carried out in a glass vessel with a graphite anode and an interchangeable cathode separated by a permeable porous polyethylene diaphragm.
