Abstract

An electrolytic or fuel cell contains an electrode which comprises a metal support, e.g. of Fe, steel, Ti or a Ti base alloy, a portion or the whole of the surface of which is conductively covered by a coating of an alloy wherein the metallic constituents of the alloy consist of Mo, W and one or more of the metals Fe, Co and Ni. The specified alloys are ternary alloys wherein the metallic constituents consist by weight (i) 2-60% Mo, 2-70% W, and 90-28% Fe or Co; (ii) 2-60% Mo, 2-45% W, and 90-38% Ni. If the alloy layer has been electrodeposited, it may contain up to 11% of non-metallic constituents such as oxide. The electrode may be in the form of wire, tube, rod, planar or curved sheet, perforated sheet, expanded metal, foraminous metal, gauze, porous, compacted or fused metal powder. The electrode may be used as a cathode in diaphragm cells for electrolysing alkali metal chloride, e.g. NaCl, to produce H2, alkali metal hydroxide and Cl2 or in chlorate or iodate cells. The alloy surface may be applied to the metal support by known methods, e.g. by electroplating, sintering a mixture of the powdered alloy metals under heat, vacuum depositing or metal spraying. Prior to electroplating, the metal support may be pretreated. Thus Examples 1, 3 and 9 disclose degreasing and pickling of steel, and Examples 2 and 6 disclose etching of Ti with a solution of HCl, NaF and H3BO3. Examples 3-9 give details of electroplating baths and conditions. All the baths contain Na4P2O7.10H2O. The compound from which the alloying metals are derived are: .Mo-NaMoO4.2H2O .W-Na2WO4.2H2O .Fe-FeCl3.6H2O .Co-CoCl2.6H2O .Ni-NiSO46H2O and NiCl2.6H2O Other compounds which are included in some of the baths are NaHCO3, N2H4.H2SO4, triammonium citrate and Na2CO3. The electroplated alloys and their metal supports are: .Ex. 3.W-Mo-Co on steel .Ex. 4.W-Mo-Fe on steel .Ex. 5.W-Mo-Ni on steel .Ex. 6.W-Mo-Co on Ti .Ex. 7.W-Mo-Fe on Ti .Ex. 8.W-Mo-Ni on Ti .Ex. 9.W-Mo-Fe on a steel wire mesh which had previously been plated with Ni from a bath containing NiSO4.6H2O, NiCl2.6H2O, H3BO3 and nickel carbonate. Specification 992,350 is referred to.
