991,710. Optical apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 1, 1962 [Jan. 4, 1961], No. 58/62. Heading G2J. [Also in Division G4] The invention provides an apparatus for the measurement of the displacement of one object relative to another and comprises a reflecting diffraction grating to which one object is fixed. MoirÚ fringes are obtained by reflection of a first part of the grating on to a second part (which may be coincident with the first part) and are detected by a photo-cell connected to the other object. The optical system is such that the light source and the photo-cells are at infinity as viewed from the respective parts of the grating. The number of pulses generated by the photo-cell is a function of the displacement. A first embodiment, Fig. 1, employs an annular grating R and includes lenses L and mirrors S. The light source is at B and the photo-cell at F. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, light from source B passes through aperture H in lens S2, and the fringes are produced by reflecting an image of the grating upon itself. The resultant fringe pattern is detected by photo-cell F. In order to determine the direction of motion of the grating a double refracting plate is inserted in the light path and just above the grating. This produces two orthogonally polarized beams which can be separated and passed to two photo-cells. Further, it may be desirable to phase modulate the photo-cell outputs by oscillating a part of the optical system, e.g. mirror S2 in Fig. 2.
