The resistance between the ends of a strip 6 made from material possessing a high specific resistance, depends upon the length shorted by being pressed into contact with a highly conductive and parallel strip 10 by the nip of respectively hard and resiliently surfaced rolls 3, 4 of a papermaking machine, the length of the material strip contact being a measure of the nip-width A-B produced. The strip 6 may be bonded on to a flexible insulating strip 7, the sides 11, 12 of which are doubled over to enclose copper wires 8, 9 each connecting one end of the strip 6 to a bridge circuit. The strip 10 is normally spaced from the strip 6 by a small air gap by bonding it to the doubled edges of the strip 7.
